FOOD SECURITY- Nicholas Powell

“In a world of plenty, no one, not a single person, should go hungry. But almost 1 billion still do not have enough to eat. I want to see an end to hunger everywhere within my lifetime.”
– Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General

For people in positions of such privilege like ourselves, we barely think about food security, but millions of people in South Africa, and indeed the world food security is a huge problem.

What is food security in terms of access and availability?

Having reliable access to nutritious, healthy, safe and affordable food.

Aspects Of Food Security

 Food Availability
Having enough food available to meet a certain demand of food in a country.

 Food Access
Food Access addresses whether households have enough funds to buy the appropriate amount of food.

Food Utilization

This is to do with how the food is stored, if it is prepared well and which quantities the food is eaten in.

Food Stability

Food stability completely depends on the other 3 factors, food stability is being confident in your supply of food, the quality of the supply, and the utilization of the food, only when you feel confident of all 3 other aspects do you have food stability.

How does drought affect food security?

It affects it negatively because the food will be less nutritious, less affordable and less healthy due to lower yields. This drives prices up as the demand is significantly greater than the supply.

What can we do to improve food security?

Start your own garden, try growing your own products, make your own fertilizer and encourage your peers to do the same!
